We are proud to announce that Emeritus Professor Gordon Dougan from the Department of Medicine has been awarded a Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). The award recognises his services to Vaccines and to Global Health.

Professor Dougan, also President of the Microbiology Society of the UK and Fellow of Wolfson College, is an internationally recognised expert in vaccinology, global health and infections. His research group exploits genomic approaches to study host-pathogen interactions and the analysis of microbial populations.

The prestigious honour highlights his important contributions in advancing vaccine development and equitable vaccine access, particularly in poorly resourced regions, as well as his commitment to nurturing the next generation of global health leaders.

Throughout his illustrious career Professor Dougan has shown an unwavering commitment to global health, and it is wonderful to see him recognised in this way. As a Department, we have redoubled our efforts in this important area with the recent appointment of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Professor of Global Heath, and we are fortunate to continue to benefit from Professor Dougan’s wisdom in his emeritus role.

Professor Duncan Richards, Head of Department of Medicine at the University of Cambridge

Professor Dougan is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Academy of Medical Sciences and is an EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization) member, working extensively in both academia and industry. He spent over a decade at the Wellcome Foundation/GSK, where he became Head of Molecular Biology and managed teams working on vaccines, humanised antibodies and scale-up systems. He then established the Centre for Molecular Microbiology and Infection at Imperial College London. From 2004-2014, he was the Board of Management representative for Pathogen Research at the Wellcome Sanger Institute.

In 2020, he was awarded the Albert Sabin Gold Medal for his work on and dedication to affordable vaccines. He is now on the board of The International Vaccine Institute based in South Korea and an advisor to industry and international health agencies.

I am delighted to receive this important recognition for my work and the people I have worked with and for. Applying science to the benefit of people and health is what I have been working toward throughout my career. I can recommend this path to anyone.
