CG-TIC is a new, interdisciplinary collaboration that combines University of Cambridge and GSK expertise in human immunology and immune-mediated diseases, AI and clinical development, with access to patient data and samples provided by Cambridge University Hospitals.
Formed in 2024, GSK has made a £53M investment over 5 years to further strengthen Cambridge’s position as Europe’s leading life sciences cluster. Our mission is to accelerate research and development into immune-related diseases by applying cutting-edge analytical technology and analytical expertise.
CG-TIC is co-led by Nicolas Wisniacki, VP, Clinical Research Head, GSK and David Thomas, Professor of Renal Medicine, University of Cambridge and principal investigator at CITIID.
By focusing on cutting-edge research and harnessing the power of AI, this has the potential to advance the treatment of immune-related diseases, which could benefit patients both here in the UK and internationally. It's a clear example of how collaboration between industry, academia, and healthcare can deliver tangible results and strengthen the UK's position in healthcare innovation.
Peter Kyle, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology
Research areas
The collaboration will focus on two disease areas:
- chronic kidney disease, estimated to affect 850 million people, roughly 10% of the world's population
- chronic respiratory disease, affecting around 545 million people
CG-TIC incorporates clinical and scientific researchers from CITIID, VPD-HLRI, the nearby Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth Hospitals, and our partners at GSK.
The partnership is built around three key themes:
- the integration of patient phenotyping
- understanding mechanisms of disease
- advancing oligonucleotide therapeutics
