Explanation of Objective Terms
FLUAR | Basic lens, uncorrected for colour but large aperture. Made of Calcium Fluorite giving low chromatic aberration. |
EC Plan NEOFLUAR | SemiApoChromat lens, corrected for red, green and blue index mismatch, but not to as high a standard as a full APOChromat lens. Made of Calcium Fluorite giving low chromatic aberration. |
LD Plan NEOFLUAR | SemiApoChromat lens, similar to the EC Plan NEOFLUAR, though a long working distance version. Made of Calcium Fluorite giving low chromatic aberration. |
10x / 0.30 | The first figure is the magnification, the second figure is the Numerical Apeture, which is a measure of light gathering power, the larger the number the greater the light gathering power |
∞ | The light passing though the objective passes through to the rest of the microscope completely parallel (in infinite focus). This allows other planar optical components to be inserted in the path without affecting the direction of the light |
0.4 Korr | Most objectives are specified for a particular thickness of coverslip and particular preparation. Korr lenses have a adjustment ring . In the 20x lens, this adjustment range is specified on the middle figure of the lowest line (0.1mm to 1.3mm), this allows you to penetrate deeper into the sample or to adjust for refractive differences in the glass or media |
– | Normally, objectives specify a particular optical thickness, low magnification lenses have such a long working distance that this limitation is irrelevant |
