Our research centres on osteoporosis and understanding why the elderly hip becomes so fragile (a £2 billion yearly headache for the NHS), despite retaining most of its apparent strength as measured by conventional densitometry. We use collections of femur specimens and DNA within large international as well as cross-departmental collaborations (Depts of Public Health and Primary Care (PHPC), Surgery, Engineering, Chemistry and Medicine).
