|This month saw the official opening of the newly refurbished Medicine laboratories and office by Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, with Professor Patrick Maxwell, Professor Sir Patrick Sissons and other key individuals in attendance. This is the first major refurbishment of the Department of Medicine for almost 30 years, recognising a remarkable increase in the size and research productivity of the Department, which has doubled in size since 2010 and now has over 700 staff and students across the Biomedical Campus. The renovation has rejuvenated and transformed the space, and will allow research to continue to flourish. There are two notable rooms in the Department: one that housed Professor Sydney Brenner (Nobel Prize in Physiology of Medicine 2002) for eight years – the original name badge has been restored in recognition of this; and the seminar room has been named in recognition of Professor Sir Patrick Sissons, who served as Head of Department in exemplary fashion for over 20 years.
The refurbishment process was initiated by Professor Sissons nine years ago, continued by Professor Tim Cox and then Professor Ken Smith. The delivery of the refurbishment has been orchestrated by the unstinting efforts of Professor Edwin Chilvers (Deputy HoD), Samantha Stokes (Business Operations Manager) and Alan Brownlee (Laboratory Facilities Manager).
